Maryland Bear Hunt Draws Media Attention
Monday’s kickoff of the second black bear hunt in Maryland following a 54 year ban garnered national media attention this week. In addition to the usual antics of anti-hunting protestors and editorials in urban newspapers calling for a last minute cancellation, the coverage included many positive signs for hunting in the Old Line State. During the first day of the hunt, an 8-year-old girl hunting with family members harvested the first bear of the season. Shortly thereafter, a 23-year-old female brought one in after her morning in the woods of Western Maryland. State wildlife management officials have set a target of taking up to 55 black bear this year, with 22 reported by the close of the second day. The Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus can be credited with fighting legislative attempts to ban black bear hunts again in the State House.
Pennsylvania Caucus Leads Legislature to Pass Internet Hunting Ban
Following consecutive unanimous votes in the House and Senate, the Pennsylvania General Assembly has sent legislation banning internet hunting to Governor Ed Rendell. The bill was introduced by Pennsylvania Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Member Representative Marc J. Gergely (D-Allegheny). The governor has indicated he will sign it, but no date has been scheduled at this time.
