NASC Executive Council to Meet and Discuss Progress of the First Six Months

As the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses wraps up its first six months, the Executive Council will be meeting next week at International Paper’s Hamilton Lake Conference Center near Lake Pleasant, NY. The purpose of this mid-year meeting of the Executive Council is to discuss the progress and numerous successes of the state caucus program during its short history. Specifically, attendees will discuss how NASC model legislation has led to a unified pro-sportsmen’s agenda that can be seen throughout the 2005 legislative session and how to strengthen NASC’s role and effectiveness. Council members will also set the agenda for the Second Annual Meeting of the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses to be held November 13-15 on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Nebraska Wraps Up First Session with Sportsmen’s Wins, More Expected for Second Session

The Nebraska Legislature concluded its first session of the 99th Legislature earlier this month. In the short time the legislature was in session during 2005, the Nebraska Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus was successful in passing Legislative Bill 121, authorizing the sale of discounted hunting and fishing licenses to veterans and active duty military men and women.

Connecticut Sportsmen Make Progress in 2005, Begin Preparation for Next Session

Members of the Connecticut Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus urged support for several pro-sportsman bills and worked to defeat many that would restrict the activities of men and women enjoying a day out in the field. The Caucus worked to pass a package of Department of Environmental Protection regulations in April that extends the fall turkey hunting season, allows for trapping of coyotes, establishes a “Bonus Buck” program that allows sportsmen who check three antlerless deer to obtain an either-sex tag for use in the same season and clarifies the non-toxic shot regulations according to federal standards.

No one understands the value of our nation's outdoor heritage more than the sportsmen who take to the field and waters each year. Through taxes on sporting equipment and license fees, sportsmen generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually to preserve America's open spaces, restore wildlife habitat and support game and nongame species alike.

During the 2005 legislative session, Missouri legislators pursued several promising pro-sportsmen initiatives and worked diligently to protect the resources available to the state’s sportsmen.

Minnesota Ends Victorious 2005 Legislative Session; Fall Dove Season Still Scheduled

The 2005 legislative session ended in Minnesota last week and the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance Legislative Caucus made positive steps in their efforts to protect sportsmen’s rights. "Once more, unlike other areas of legislative work, sportsmen legislators and the sporting groups coalition held together on several issues in our 2005 regular session," remarked Caucus Co-Chair and Vice President of the NASC Executive Council Senator Pat Pariseau (R-Farmington).

Tennessee Closes Proactive 2005 Legislative Session

Demonstrating how a state sportsmen’s caucus can promote a proactive sportsmen’s agenda, the Tennessee Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus introduced several sportsmen friendly bills during the 2005 session.
